About Motorcycle Boots
A rider’s feet are the closest thing to the ground so it’s important to protect them while on your bike. Motorcycle boots come in a wide variety of styles ranging from casual lightweight street shoes, to heavy duty leather race, adventure or cruiser boots. There is also a great range of motocross and enduro boots for the dirt and trail riders out there. What ever your style of riding, there is a boot to suit. Riding apparel has come a long way over the years in style, comfort and protection so you will be sure to find the perfect boot for you.
Why it’s Important to Choose the Right Motorcycle Boot
Boots play a vital part in protection, safety and injury prevention on the road or off road, and all have unique features that cater to every rider’s needs. So, let’s break it down into categories- Street boots, Cruiser boots, Touring boots, Sport/Race boots, Adventure boots, Enduro boots and last but not least Motocross boots. When buying boots riders need to take into consideration what features they are looking for, and the functionality and practicality of the boots for the type of riding they are doing. It’s important to remember that boots can feel rigid and firm for a reason, they are there to protect your feet, ankles and lower leg and will not feel like your average shoe (with the exception of some lightweight motorcycle street shoes).
Scooter riders or street riders who commute short distances and require flexibility and comfort would be suited to the street boots. These type of motorcycle boots closely resemble a shoe, which makes them perfect for regular and all-day wear, if worn at work. They still feature a non-slip sole and protection in the toe, heel and ankle, without the feel of a bulky boot, and some models even offer breathable waterproof liners.
If you’re a street rider who commutes a longer journey, or just simply wants more protection, then the sports boot or touring boot is one to consider. These motorcycle boots are usually a mid-height boot that cover up to half of your shin, not like the tall adventure or motocross boots. The sport boot is of a full leather construction and features toe, heel and ankle plate protection, as well as a plastic toe slider replaceable if you’ve dragged a bit too much toe in the twisties. You will also find ankle support such as a pivot and a spine on the back of the boot for calf/tendon support. The touring boot is also a great choice for street riders that do a lot of long commutes or touring in general. These boots offer waterproof protection as well as the toe, heel and ankle, and will have a good non-slip sole which make these perfect for the more unwanted weather conditions.
If you’re racing or just love your track days, then you should be looking at a good race boot. These feature an inner boot for maximum support and protection for your ankle and will usually have some ventilation for those hot track conditions. Style varies between different brands as some have inner lace closures, zips and ratchet straps, while others have BOA systems.
The cruiser motorcycle boots have a very distinct style and if you ride a Harley or a cruiser, you’re sure to pick up a set of these. A heavy leather boot with a good thick sole that usually feature a bit of a heel as well, these come in tall, mid and short heights. Most will be a straight leather boot with a thick leather strap around the outside of the ankle to hold you in, however there are other styles that feature laces, zips and buckles for those that want or need easier access to the boot.
Whether you’re just starting out or hitting the big jumps on the dirt tracks, motocross boots have a wide range to suit every type of off-road rider. Your entry level boot will be a little more flexible and easier to get used to, whilst a heavy-duty motocross race boot will feel very rigid and tight. Motocross boots feature plenty of straps and closures for a secure fit and the protection continues with plastic panels, bracing, inner booties, extension locks and more. There are plenty of boot models to suit every rider level, but riders should keep in mind these boots are not made for walking. When buying a set of motocross boots they should be a firm fit and feel a bit rigid just like having a cast on your leg, they are there to do their job and prevent injury that commonly occurs with hyperextension, lower leg impacts and ankle joints. Don’t worry all boots wear in, some will take longer than others depending on style and brand but be sure the boot is still comfortable when first trying them on.
